A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac in the breast tissue — very common and benign. Breast cysts occur especially between about 35 and 50 years and around menopause. They are hormone-driven: oestrogen (oestradiol) is the main factor, including as hormone-replacement therapy, so cysts typically fluctuate with the cycle and become fuller and more tender before a period. On palpation a cyst often feels smooth, round and movable. It is easily confirmed by ultrasound; a “simple” cyst is benign and usually needs no treatment — many resolve on their own. If it bothers or presses, the doctor can drain it (aspirate the fluid); it then collapses at once. There is no proven home remedy that dissolves it faster. Reassuring: a simple breast cyst does not turn into cancer. Even so: any new breast lump should be confirmed once, and a hard, fixed lump, skin changes or bloody discharge from the nipple should be assessed promptly. Suspicious imaging findings are sorted into categories; for categories zero, three, four and five a further assessment by ultrasound follows.
The key step: confirm once (exam + ultrasound) that it really is a cyst.
A confirmed simple cyst often resolves on its own — agreed monitoring is enough.
If it presses or hurts, the doctor can aspirate the fluid — the fast route. Don’t squeeze it yourself.
A supportive bra and warmth ease tension; the role of oestrogen/HRT is discussed with the doctor. Cutting coffee/salt at most helps comfort, doesn’t dissolve the cyst.
Cysts occur most often between thirty-five and fifty and usually disappear after the menopause. They change size with the cycle and are fullest just before the period — so the examination is done in the first half of the cycle where possible. A simple cyst on ultrasound needs no follow-up. If it is drained, it refills in some women within weeks to months; that is not a bad sign.
No drug dissolves a cyst. As for the complaints: the pill smooths the cycle and with it the change in size; evening primrose oil and chasteberry are used traditionally and have been examined in smaller studies. Draining empties a large, pressing cyst at once; in some it refills. A simple cyst on ultrasound needs neither treatment nor follow-up — doing nothing here is the decision, not an omission.
This is how a typical benign cyst feels — often tender.
Fluctuates with the cycle, fuller before a period; oestrogen (also as HRT) is the main factor.
A “simple” cyst on ultrasound is benign and usually needs no treatment.
These signs are atypical for a cyst and should be assessed promptly.
Only useful if fluid comes from the nipple. For the cyst itself the ultrasound says everything that matters.
Every bleed costs iron. With heavy or long periods the store empties faster than it fills — ferritin shows this earlier than the haemoglobin.
Often used for cramps of the womb muscle. The studies are small and inconsistent; it is well tolerated, and the belly shows the upper limit.
Acts on ovary and womb lining. Low values are common; correcting them is worthwhile for bone and muscle regardless of the cycle.
Often named for complaints before the period and defensible in a moderate dose. At a high dose over months it harms the nerves — that is the limit that counts.
A cyst is a hollow space with fluid, not a lump of tissue — on ultrasound the difference is unmistakable, and that is why this examination brings so much calm here. Cysts change size with the cycle and mostly disappear by themselves after the menopause.
The most frequently named remedy for aching breasts. The larger controlled studies found no difference from dummy treatment — and in the same studies the dummy group improved markedly, because cyclical breast pain fluctuates by itself. Tolerable; only the expectation belongs set to that size.
The recommendation to leave off coffee has held since the 1980s. In the controlled re-examinations no connection could be found — which does not rule out that it helps individuals. Two cycles without coffee are a trial one can make on oneself, and there is no more to say about it.
Clearly effective with proven deficiency, useless without. Take only with a documented deficiency — excess is harmful.
Effective when deficient; effects on sleep and stress plausible but moderate. Too much causes loose stool.
Clearly worthwhile and well studied when deficient; fewer data for the wider uses. Fat-soluble — check blood levels at high doses.
Cysts vary with the cycle — which is why they are often fuller and sorer before the bleed.
The counterpart in the second half of the cycle; the interplay of the two explains the rhythm of the symptoms.
The link between coffee and breast cysts is often mentioned but not confirmed in controlled studies. Anyone wanting to check leaves caffeine out for two cycles and then judges.
Traditionally used for breast tenderness. Controlled trials found no difference from placebo — it does not make cysts recede.
