Constant thirst together with frequent urination (also at night) is a combination to take seriously — it’s a classic early sign of high blood sugar (diabetes): the body tries to get rid of excess sugar via the urine and loses a lot of water. Often tiredness, unintended weight loss or vision problems are added. There are also harmless reasons (drinking a lot, heat, coffee, water tablets) and rarer causes. Because diabetes caught early is very treatable, a simple blood-sugar test is worthwhile with this combination — it quickly brings clarity.
The key step with this combination — simple, quick and informative.
Tell the doctor about weight loss, tiredness or blurred vision.
Weigh fluids, heat and medicines — but check the sugar anyway.
Diabetes caught early can be managed very well — the check is worth it.
More than three litres of urine a day counts as excessive. If strong thirst comes with it, the three most common reasons are diabetes, a high calcium level and the rarer forms of diabetes insipidus. In type 1 diabetes this develops over days to a few weeks, in type 2 over months to years — that difference in timing often says more than the amount itself.
In diabetes the drugs lower the sugar, and with it thirst and urine volume disappear within days — often the first thing to improve. In central diabetes insipidus, desmopressin replaces the missing hormone and works at once; in the renal form it does not work, because the kidney does not listen to it. What applies in both cases: do not restrict drinking to lower the volume — thirst here is the safeguard, not the problem.

Accompanying signs that strengthen the suspicion of diabetes.
Drinking a lot, heat, coffee or water tablets can explain it.
A sufficient amount of urine across the day dilutes what would otherwise crystallise or irritate. Spread evenly it works better than in two large portions.
Low values are common with raised body weight because the vitamin is bound in fat tissue. Correcting it makes sense; as a means of losing weight there are no studies.
With reduced kidney function it rises and becomes dangerous for the heart rhythm; under water tablets it falls. In both directions it belongs measured and not guessed.
Involved in the action of insulin inside the cell. With poorly controlled sugar it is lost through the urine — a circle that can be closed.
Cutting out calcium is the wrong route with stones: it binds oxalate already in the bowel. Calcium with the meal instead of between meals is the lever, not avoidance.
With chromium deficiency sugar metabolism improves measurably. Deficiency is rare in Europe, and without it studies at 200–1000 µg a day show small shifts at best.
Lowers fasting sugar markedly in studies — 500 mg two to three times a day. It acts on the same enzymes as many medicines; anyone taking those needs to know it rather than combine casually.
Clearly worthwhile and well studied when deficient; fewer data for the wider uses. Fat-soluble — check blood levels at high doses.
Effective when deficient; effects on sleep and stress plausible but moderate. Too much causes loose stool.
The commonest road: if the sugar climbs above the kidney’s threshold, it pulls water with it — from which come large amounts of urine and the thirst that follows.
If this hormone is missing or the kidney does not answer it, very large amounts of pale urine appear with a normal sugar. That is rare, has a name of its own and is clarified with its own test.
A high calcium likewise causes thirst and frequent passing of water, together with tiredness and constipation. It is among the causes thought of late.
Strong thirst together with frequent urination is the classic first sign of diabetes. Before adjusting fluid intake blood sugar belongs measured — that takes five minutes.
This combination is the classic first sign of diabetes. Before changing anything in the diet blood sugar belongs measured — five minutes that change everything that follows.
