Occupational therapy starts from the activity, not the single muscle: dressing, writing, cooking, working. The activity itself is practised, with aids, splints and changes to the surroundings. For the hand, hand therapy is a branch of its own, with splint-making and scar treatment. After a stroke there are programmes with fixed amounts — for instance constrained practice of the affected side over two weeks with several hours a day; controlled trials exist. For many other reasons the trials are small, and what is measured is independence in daily life, not a lab value.
Not a value in the blood but what someone can do alone again — dressing, eating, writing. This is captured with questionnaires and observed tasks. Such measures are coarser than a lab value and closer to everyday life.
