Regular screening finds the precursors — and precursors can be removed.
Also known as: cervical cancer · cervical carcinoma

Almost always develops from a years-long infection with certain human papillomaviruses (HPV). Most HPV infections clear on their own; only a small share progresses, via cell changes on the cervix, to cancer — and that usually takes many years. Early stages cause no symptoms; later there may be bleeding between periods, after intercourse or after menopause, altered discharge or pain. The smear test detects cell changes before cancer develops — these precursors can be removed.
The treatment plan is not made by one person alone but in a round of surgery, oncology, radiology, pathology and radiotherapy. You may ask what was discussed there and which alternatives came up.
Before a big decision it is planned for in many clinics, and the records belong to you. It costs one to two weeks — acceptable in almost every course, and one asks about that if it is urgent.
It is today part of the treatment and not its opposite: it lessens the exhaustion, keeps muscle and bone and improves how the treatment is tolerated. Begin with guidance, less on bad days, but not nothing at all.
Unintended weight loss worsens how any treatment is tolerated. Restrictive diets do more harm than good here — with loss of appetite, dietary advice helps early, not only once kilos are already gone.
By the clock rather than as needed works better and needs less overall. Fear of dependence is the wrong adviser in this situation — untreated pain costs sleep, appetite and strength.
Psycho-oncological support, social advice for insurance and work, and the question of who takes on what at home. This is no emergency measure but belongs at the start — and the relatives belong in it.
Vaccination acts preventively against the virus types that cause most of these cancers — it does not treat an existing infection. So screening remains part of the path even after vaccination. A precancerous change is removed locally, which is enough for the great majority. In advanced tumours the combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy works better than either alone — one of the clearer demonstrations of a joint effect.
From infection with a high-risk virus type to a cancer, ten to twenty years usually pass — that long span is why screening works so well. More than ninety out of a hundred infections clear by themselves within one to two years. The smear is done every three years depending on the country, the HPV test every five. A precancerous change is removed locally; follow-up then continues over twenty years.
Bleeding after intercourse, between periods or after the menopause. That is the most common first sign and the clearest reason for an appointment.
Increased, watery, reddish or foul-smelling discharge over weeks — especially if it does not respond to the usual treatments.
That is exactly the reason for the smear check: the changes that can be treated best cause no complaints at all. Anyone waiting for a sign waits too long.
Pain in the pelvis or back, pain on passing water, a swollen leg. These are signs of an advanced spread and no reason to ignore the early ones.
Screening runs through the smear and the test for human papillomavirus, not through the blood. This value belongs alongside when bleeding occurs outside the period.
Important, because an advanced finding can narrow the ureters. A rise is therefore taken seriously.
The loss of muscle mass helps decide how well a treatment is tolerated. Enough protein spread across the day, together with movement, is the part one holds oneself.
Low values are common with a longer illness, and correcting them counts for bone and muscle. For high-dose courses against the illness itself there are no studies; they can interfere with treatment.
Belong in the workup of an anaemia that is otherwise too quickly put down to the illness or the treatment. Both are easy to measure and easy to supplement.
Nausea, diarrhoea and fever dry one out quickly, and several treatments strain the kidney. Drinking enough is no side issue here.
Observational studies find abnormal smears more often with low folate and B12 levels. Whether replacement changes that is open — it certainly does not replace the check-up at intervals.
After radiation in the pelvis, bone density is a topic for years, especially at the sacrum. Vitamin D and calcium are the ground everything else builds on.
With radiation in the pelvis, diarrhoea is the commonest side effect. For some lactobacillus strains a reduction is described; the effect is weak and strain-dependent, but the attempt carries little risk.
Clearly worthwhile and well supported when deficient — vegan, older adults, certain drugs. No energy boost without a deficiency.
After radiation to the pelvis the ovaries mostly stop working — in young women that means an immediate menopause. They can be surgically moved out of the radiation field before the treatment; afterwards not.
With very early forms there are procedures that keep the womb and leave a pregnancy possible. Anyone who wants children says so before the decision — not afterwards.
Observational studies find persistent HPV infections more often when folate and vitamin C are low. Whether supplementing changes that is not established — green vegetables, pulses and citrus cover both.
The claim usually rests on the PET scan: weakly radioactive glucose is injected, and the tumour lights up. That shows tumour cells take up sugar faster than the tissue next to them — not that eaten sugar feeds them. You come to a PET scan fasting, and the tumour lights up anyway; the body keeps blood sugar within narrow limits by itself. It cannot be starved out this way. There is an established link nonetheless, but it runs through body fat: in 2016 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reviewed the available studies and found sufficient evidence, for thirteen cancers, that absence of excess weight lowers the risk. That concerns prevention — it is not an answer to where an existing illness came from.
Observational studies find persistent HPV infections more often with low folate. That supplementing changes this has not been shown — vaccination and screening are the established route.
