Speech and language therapy covers three different tasks: language and speech (stuttering, articulation, aphasia after stroke), the voice (hoarseness, nodules, strain in speaking professions) and swallowing (dysphagia). The amounts differ widely: for aphasia, trials show a difference mainly with intensive practice — on the order of several hours a week over weeks; a few minutes now and then does not reach that. For dysphagia it is about safety while eating, and that is measurable. For voice matters much depends on whether the cause lies in the tissue or in the way of speaking; an examination of the vocal folds separates that, not the exercise. The individual conditions — from language development in toddlers to swallowing in older age, with amount, duration and warning signs — are ordered by age at logopaedie.borters.ch.
In aphasia after stroke, the gap between little and much practice is clearer in trials than the gap between methods. It is one of the few points in this field with a number behind it.
