Your own pulse

DE FR EN

The pulse is the simplest measurement you have yourself — rest, rhythm and recovery say a lot.

Also known as: resting pulse · measuring pulse · heart rate · palpitations · irregular pulse · recovery

This compilation is for information and replaces neither medical diagnosis nor treatment. If you have symptoms, see a doctor.

The pulse is self-observation in its purest form: two fingers to the wrist and you have honest feedback from your body — free, any time. At rest most sit between 60 and 100/min, trained people often below. Reassuring: occasional “skips” almost everyone has, almost always harmless; a low resting pulse usually signals good fitness. Pay attention if the pulse feels persistently irregular, races for no reason, or comes with dizziness and chest tightness — get it checked; acute chest pain → call your local emergency number. Tap a pattern on the graphic. From the age of seventy-five, or with a raised stroke risk, a single ECG is part of it even without noticeable symptoms — so that atrial fibrillation that has gone unnoticed shows up.

Levers & pathways

studiedHow to measure properly

Sit for five minutes, then feel at the wrist with two fingers, count for fifteen seconds and multiply by four. What matters is not only the number but whether the beat is even.

studiedMeasure the resting pulse in bed in the morning

Always at the same time, before getting up and before coffee. Written down over weeks it shows one’s own normal range — and a rise of more than five to ten beats is a sign of infection, overtraining or too little sleep.

studiedWith an irregular beat have it recorded

A pulse with no pattern at all speaks for atrial fibrillation and is often not felt. What matters is the recording at the moment of the irregularity — a resting electrocardiogram in between is usually normal.

studiedCheck thyroid and blood as well

A permanently high resting pulse without explanation leads on through two simple values: thyroid and anaemia. Both are treatable and often explain the tiredness alongside too.

studiedWhen the pulse is not the point

A racing heart with chest pain, breathlessness or a brief loss of consciousness is not a question for measuring at home but for the emergency call. The same goes for a very slow pulse with dizziness.

infoNumbers and timeframes

The resting pulse in adults usually lies between sixty and a hundred beats a minute; in endurance-trained people forty to fifty are normal. It is measured sitting after five minutes of rest, over a full minute — counting for fifteen seconds multiplies any error fourfold. The pulse rises by about eight to ten beats per degree of fever. A resting pulse raised by ten beats over weeks says more than a single high reading.

Possible complaints

studiedNumber AND feel

Both matter: the rate (beats/min) and whether it feels even or jumbled.

studiedHarmless influences

Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, stress, little sleep, fever and a full bladder briefly raise the pulse — quite normal.

studiedWhen to get checked

Persistently irregular, resting pulse very high/low with dizziness, breathlessness or chest tightness. Acute severe chest pain → call your local number.

studiedThe nicest lever: movement

Regular endurance lowers the resting pulse over weeks — visible proof something is moving for the better.

studiedSkips at rest

Especially in the evening winding down, single extra beats feel more noticeable — that doesn’t make them more dangerous.

Blood values

studiedTSH (thyroid)

A persistently fast resting pulse can come from an overactive thyroid.

studiedFerritin / blood count

Anaemia makes the heart beat faster — check the iron store.

Nutrients

studiedMagnesium

Makes sure the muscle lets go again after tensing. A lack favours cramps, twitching and inner restlessness — and the blood value reflects the store poorly.

associatedOmega-3 fatty acids

They lower the blood fats and act on the excitability of the heart muscle. Oily sea fish twice a week is the best-supported route; very high doses from capsules are not a harmless more.

studiedPotassium

Sets the excitability of muscle and nerve. A low value causes weakness and cramps, a high one is dangerous for the heart rhythm — here one measures rather than guesses.

associatedCalcium

Sets off the tensing in the muscle in the first place. A low value causes tingling around the mouth and in the fingers and cramping of the hands.

studiedSodium and fluid

With heavy sweating both are lost together. Drinking only water dilutes the sodium further — with long exertion salt belongs with it.

Supplements

infoCaffeine

Lifts the resting pulse by a few beats and makes it noticeable. The half-life is 5–6 hours — a measured resting pulse only says something if the last cup is a while back.

studiedIron

With anaemia the heart beats faster to deliver the same oxygen. A persistently raised resting pulse with no other reason belongs looked at with ferritin and haemoglobin.

mixedMagnesium (glycinate/citrate)

With a proven deficiency extra beats occur more often and go with the correction. Without a deficiency no effect on rhythm is shown.

infoOmega-3 (EPA/DHA)

Effects on inflammation and triglycerides established; cardiovascular prevention is mixed. Watch quality and freshness.

Hormones

studiedT4 (thyroxine)

The thyroid sets the base speed. A resting pulse that sits 15–20 beats higher than before for weeks is one of the best reasons to measure TSH and T4 — and a persistently slow pulse just as much.

associatedAdrenaline

The pulse lying down, measured before getting up, is the most honest value — every bit of excitement, every walk and every cup of coffee shifts it upwards.

associatedErythropoietin (EPO)

With anaemia the heart beats faster to deliver the same oxygen. The kidney tries to compensate through EPO — which is why haemoglobin and ferritin belong with a persistently raised resting pulse.

TCM — how it is seen there

traditionalPulse diagnosis

TCM feels the pulse at three positions per side and distinguishes dozens of qualities.

traditionalPulse qualities (the main ones)

Superficial or deep, fast or slow, wiry or slippery — the pattern is read from that.
