The brain learns the rush, not the win — which is why distance helps more than resolutions.

In gambling addiction a person loses control over gambling — whether on machines, sports betting or online. As with other addictions, the urge for the next game gradually takes over the controls, often with attempts to win back losses by gambling more. This is not a matter of weak character or lack of willpower, but a recognised illness in which the brain’s reward systems play a large part. The consequences range from financial worries through shame and secrecy to strains on relationships and work. That is exactly why the most important and hopeful point is: gambling addiction is very treatable, and effective help exists — the first step, confiding in someone, is often the hardest and at the same time the most important.
The first step out of secrecy — a trusted person or a counselling service.
Self-exclusion, hand over accounts/cards, block apps/sites.
Addiction counselling and therapy work well; self-help groups give support.
Debt counselling relieves pressure and restores room to act.
There is no licensed drug for gambling addiction. Naltrexone, which damps the reward effect, has been studied and lowers the urge in some people; the effect shows within two to six weeks. What carries most is behavioural therapy over eight to twelve weeks and self-exclusion, which cuts off access for months to years — it acts not on the urge but on the opportunity, and that is exactly its point.
About one to two in a hundred people are affected; considerably more gamble in a risky way without meeting the criteria. The diagnosis requires a pattern over at least twelve months with loss of control, rising stakes and continuing despite consequences. Machine gambling and online offerings lead into dependence far faster than other forms, because the time between stake and result is short. Self-exclusion works over months to years and lowers access, not the urge.
A recognised illness of the reward system — not lack of willpower.
Gambling on to recover losses is a typical warning sign.
Hiding and silence often keep the addiction going.
With financial hardship, feeling trapped or dark thoughts → don’t stay alone, seek help quickly.
A lack causes exhaustion, problems concentrating, low mood and forgetfulness — and it is one of the few causes that can be found and put right with a single blood draw.
Low values are common with low mood. Whether correcting it lifts the mood is not settled; that it makes sense in winter at our latitudes is.
An empty store causes tiredness, lack of drive and problems concentrating long before any anaemia becomes visible. In women of childbearing age the most common single reason.
A building block of the cell coverings in the brain. The studies on mood are inconsistent; as part of a good diet it belongs there anyway.
Needed for making the messengers in the brain. It runs short with alcohol and under certain medicines — and it is always judged together with B12.
What works is behaviour therapy and self-exclusion with the operators — both well established, both uncomfortable. No nutrient intervenes in a reward circuit that has been practised over years. What is still worth it here: sleep and alcohol, because both measurably change the likelihood of relapse.
The one substance that has been examined at all in this field. Small studies with 1 200–2 400 mg daily found a decrease in the urge in gambling and other compulsive patterns; the studies are small and were not consistently confirmed. It is a pointer, not a treatment — and nobody stops gambling because of NAC.
Clearly worthwhile and well supported when deficient — vegan, older adults, certain drugs. No energy boost without a deficiency.
Clearly worthwhile and well studied when deficient; fewer data for the wider uses. Fat-soluble — check blood levels at high doses.
Clearly effective with proven deficiency, useless without. Take only with a documented deficiency — excess is harmful.
Effects on inflammation and triglycerides established; cardiovascular prevention is mixed. Watch quality and freshness.
In pregnancy clearly established against neural-tube defects, otherwise mainly with deficiency. Can mask a B12 deficiency — watch both.
The most important point on this page: dopamine medicines for Parkinson’s and for restless legs trigger gambling, compulsive shopping or hypersexuality in some of those treated — in people who never knew this before. It goes when the dose falls. It is rarely asked about, and almost nobody brings it up unprompted.
The near miss acts in the brain almost like a win — heartbeat and stress hormones rise just the same. Machines are built on exactly that, and it is exactly what makes stopping harder than with a substance.
In the first weeks restlessness and sleep trouble are common. Fixed meals and less caffeine in the evening take away part of the physical restlessness — they do not replace support.
Studied for reducing craving. The effects are small and the studies few — the benefit lies more in noticing the urge before it acts.
