Warts are benign skin growths caused by certain skin viruses (human papillomaviruses). They are very common, especially in children, and as a rule harmless. Notably, many warts disappear on their own after months to a few years, once the immune system gets on top of them. They spread by skin contact and via damp floors — which is why they are especially common on the feet (plantar warts), where they can press when walking. For stubborn or bothersome warts there are various treatments. Above all, don’t dismiss an unclear, changing skin spot as a wart yourself — when in doubt, have it looked at. Not everything that looks like a wart is one: soft skin tags (fibromas) and brownish seborrhoeic keratoses have nothing to do with viruses and are likewise harmless.

Levers & pathways

associatedPatience

Since many clear on their own, waiting is often a good option.

associatedTreat if needed

Freezing or acid preparations help with bothersome warts — apply consistently.

associatedReduce spread

Don’t scratch, wear sandals at pools, don’t share towels.

associatedWhen to see a dermatologist

With stubborn, painful or unclear changes.

traditionalWarts: cover and wait

Cover the wart with a plaster, after bathing gently pare away the softened horny layer, repeat weekly.

infoWhat the medicine does — and what it does not

Salicylic acid takes off layer by layer — it does not kill the virus, it removes the tissue it sits in, and that takes twelve weeks of daily use. Freezing works about as well and must be repeated every two to three weeks. Both reach roughly two thirds. Untreated, two thirds of warts in children go away by themselves within two years, because the immune system recognises the virus — which explains why very many home remedies are held to work.

infoNumbers and timeframes

Warts occur in about one in three schoolchildren. Untreated, two thirds go away by themselves within two years in children; in adults it takes longer. Salicylic acid needs twelve weeks daily, freezing every two to three weeks over several sessions; both reach about two thirds. Verrucas on the sole take longest, because the horny layer is thickest there.

studiedSkin tags are not warts — and they point to something

Soft, stalked skin tags on the neck, armpits, groin and under the breasts are connective-tissue outgrowths and have nothing to do with papillomaviruses. Their strongest link is sugar metabolism: they occur more often with insulin resistance, frequently alongside velvety, thickened, darker skin in the same folds — acanthosis nigricans. Both are skin signs, not skin diseases. Anyone who gets many new ones over months has a reason to have long-term sugar measured, which is already in this dossier’s marker list. Friction and pregnancy encourage them as well.

mixedIodine and garlic on the wart — what is true

Neither is made up: there is a small study of a garlic extract on warts, and povidone-iodine is used topically. Two things in the circulating instructions are still wrong. Nothing disappears overnight — the studies run for weeks, and two thirds of warts go away by themselves anyway, which makes almost any remedy look good. And raw crushed garlic is not an extract: under a plaster, that is under occlusion and for hours, it burns the skin — redness, blisters and a mark that outlasts the wart. What matters is not the remedy but that an unclear skin spot was looked at first.

Possible complaints

associatedHarmless, from skin viruses

HPV skin viruses cause the benign growth.

associatedOften clear on their own

In many, the wart clears spontaneously over months to years.

associatedContagious by contact

Skin-to-skin and via damp floors (pools, showers).

associated⚠️ Unclear skin spot

A changing, bleeding or unclear spot — don’t self-judge → get it checked.

Blood values

studiedLymphocytes

Only if warts are unusually numerous and persist for years is immune status looked at — lymphocytes in the blood count belong to that.

studiedHbA1c (long-term sugar)

With very stubborn warts the long-term sugar is measured, because high blood sugar slows the skin’s defences.

Nutrients

associatedZinc

Supports immune defence against HPV.

associatedVitamin A

Important for skin/epithelium; studied (topical/oral) for warts.

associatedVitamin D

Immunomodulating; low levels linked to stubborn warts.

Supplements

mixedZinc

For stubborn warts 10 mg per kilogram a day over 2 months has been studied, with strikingly good results in small trials from regions where zinc deficiency is widespread. That amount is high — it belongs accompanied, not self-assembled.

mixedVitamin D3 (+K2)

Studied as an injection directly into the wart, not as a capsule. Most warts disappear on their own within 1–2 years — which makes any treatment hard to judge.

Hormones

studiedCortisol

Under cortisone and with weakened defences warts occur more often, grow larger and disappear less readily by themselves. The immune system is the actual treatment here — every method only assists it.

associatedEstradiol

In pregnancy genital warts often grow faster and in greater numbers — the defences are deliberately dampened so that the child can stay. After birth they often recede by themselves.

Food

associatedImmune defence in the background

Warts clear by themselves within 1–2 years in most people once the immune system recognises them. Vitamin D deficiency is more common with stubborn warts — correcting it is no wart cure, but it makes sense.

Alternative approaches — what people use

traditionalTea tree oil

Traditionally applied; most warts also go on their own, only more slowly.

studiedZinc

Studied internally for stubborn warts, especially with a proven deficiency.

Wild herbs — what is traditionally used

traditionalGreater celandine

The yellow milky sap is the best-known home remedy for warts. Internally the plant is liver-toxic — external use only, spot by spot.

Essential oils — use and limits

mixedTea tree

Applied precisely to the spot, daily over weeks to months — that is the frame in which reports exist. Controlled studies are missing; time plays its part anyway, two thirds disappear by themselves.
